J-Po and the V.A.B

I got to the Closing Bell a little early after walking through the biggest monsoon in the history of the world. This place is more of a bar with a stage than an actual music venue. By day it's a lunch spot for music row suits. None the less, it started to fill up around 9 and the opening band took the stage.
The HGB, (Home Grown Band) were a 3 piece from a little hippie community called the Farm. They launched into their set and did their best to get the collared shirts and summer dresses moving with their Sublime-like songs. The drummer was really tight and he was playing a really cool snare that added a good pop to the sound. The bass player did most of the singing which was good because I'm not sure if the guitar player was awake or aware that he was playing a show or even on earth. These guys were a fun little band. Playing music they like and having fun. They finished their set and were getting ready to leave the stage when a drunk fratty started yelling for "Bad Fish", a Sublime song. Of course they obliged, and did a pretty good job.

Oh, J-Po.

It was fun watching the over sized band play a round of "how many people can we stuff onto this tiny stage?". After a profanity laced self intro, J-Po and the V.A.B got going. Within the first minute of the song, J-Po was up on the bar waving his hands much like he doesn't care.

This guy J-Po is a skinny white kid that is almost like a mix between Ali G and a black southern preacher. He is known for surrounding himself with fantastic musicians which is the only real reason to ever see this act. That and the fact that it was free. I'll never pay to see this joker.

After a couple of songs filled with "uh" and "what" repeats, we were treated to a cameo from an "MC" who was a lifelong Tennessee resident that thinks he grew up in the Bronx. This guy gets up on stage, rambles off a bunch of nonsense, waves HIS hands in the air and disappears just like that.

So about 20 minutes in, the people started to realize that, yes, this does suck, so they start to leave. What does J-Po do? He cusses them, talks junk about the bars next door, promises an orgy to anyone who stays inside, and launches into his slow dance number "Sex in the Morning". Then he sits down on the bar, lets his awesome band all take solos, and clicks around on his iphone. All in all it was exactly what I expected. A good funky band interrupted by a towel swinging jack-ass. You might ask "why would you go if you knew it would be bad?" Well it was free, a few of my friends are in the band, and J-Po has a tendency to have lots of girls at his shows. It was something to do. More like sitting at a bar with a loud obnoxious juke box than attending an actual concert. J-Po, what a joke.

  3. This is the most biased review ive ever read. i agree with the last post. this guy reviewed The Toadies and said he never liked Bang bang Bang because the lead singer dated a girl he had a crush on. youre not a critic bro. your a hater.

  4. I agree withe the last two posts for you're info you dispicable piece of garbage the MC was born and Raised in Queens how dare you say the Bronx, you are loser and you will never make it as a review columnist blah fuckin blah whatever you are... Also, I happen to think Vivid keeps it Hip Hop as opposed to the rest of nashville that can not rap at all... If you knew anything about Hip Hop you would say at least the kid is keeping it Hip Hop and doing it well... You're a fuckin douche bag hater and I hate people like you... I wish I could put a face with the fagot pseudoname so I bust your jaw!

  6. wow, it's pretty obvious that these comments are from the members of the v.a.b that got slammed. take it easy guys. if you plan to be performers in nashville, you need to be ready to be reviewed. i was at this show too and though it might not have been their best show, it was what it was. if you're gonna threaten an ass whippin every time you get a bad review, you're gonna need a lot of spare time. keep your heads up v.a.b, one out of 10 isn't bad. especially for that show.

  7. I agree, we are going to have to take our blows especially when it is some what waranted, the show that night was not even close to what we could really do and we have to be concious of that... I appreciate all the posts in our defense but people that want to be heard will be heard and some people try to make a name for themselves by taking the bashing approach... Let them do their thing... But just for the record, I was born and raised in Queens, I am not a TN native... Just want to clear that up...

  8. vivid, i stand corrected. uninformed statement on my part. like the first comment said, music review, not personal stabs. lesson learned. however, i stand by my review of the show.

  9. Raul, youve got a lot of libel in this review brother. You need to get your facts straight before putting something like this out there. You also need to gain a little more professionalism in your choice of words. You're intitled to your opinion and by all means, review our shows accordingly, but if you want to cut someone down on a personal level, you shouldnt do it hiding behind a pen. That to me seems pretty weak on your behalf. Anyways, regarding the show to the 10+ people that have read this "6 follower" blog site, - I created, wrote, and put together J-PO and the V.A.B. and I could care less about whether our show was good or bad to someone that doesnt mean shit to me. - I do cuss people, I do promise orgies, and I am a skinny white kid, ....thats 30. ha. If youve been to our shows, you know how we get down. And to the 25-30 people who came out to the rain drenching, show of drunkness - if you didnt like it, the good news is it was free. But I had a great time. Just not the next morning.

  10. And yes, the V.A.B. does consist of great musicians including Vivid, which in my opinion is one of the best MC's in Nashville. He doesnt produce "nonsense". My lyrics consist of more than "uh" and "what". You are not reviewing us in this blog, you are distorting our name. Get with the program brotherman!

  11. ah this is silly let the man have his opinion. us as musicians feed off of this shit. and im sure j po knows that. weve played with jpo many times and had nothing but good times. he needs to see you guys on a better night and a better venue. one were you cats can really shine and then form your opinion. but hey just remember any press is good press.....much love to all. and thanks to raul for his kind words about us at the boro.

  12. J-Po sucks soo bad, you are a horrible singer with a great band. we saw the brass and the two guitar players and we were excited and then this stupid punk white boy got on stage and kept grabbing his dick while singing. not to be too harsh but will you please just manage the band or something? it sounded like the band was running on all cylinders but you are not a good singer and are very annoying with you spastic hand movements

  13. Vivid,
Being the best rapper in Nashville is like being the tallest midget. If you rap as good as you type/spell you just might be the best M.C. walking the mean streets of Nashville. What a joke. Go back to Queens.

  15. in the past 2 years, i've had like, 6 girlfriends and every time i've taken one to see j-po, they leave me and go home with him. so the only thing i can do is get on the inter-web and talk about how much his band sucks because damn, he is such a player. maybe one day i'll find the "right one" and she'll love me for me and not leave me for such a profound artist (barf) and (puke) damn you are so funny j-po. keep up the comedy act and quit singing already.

  16. This blog has been brought to my attention once again and i dont understand this. These are very crude remarks/stabs towards me personally. I play music because i enjoy doing it. Its a hobby of mine and always will be. I enjoy being a part of Nashville's local music. Never said i was the best singer. Never said my band was better than H Beam (you seem to like them a lot). Why would anyone who supports local music here in Nashville spend the time bashing someone's name like this? Help the bands you want to help, including your own of course, but ripping on other local, unsigned bands, that mostly arent even trying to make it in the biz, doesnt do anything positive to the local music scene here in Nashville. There's so many negative sides to the music business here already. Why be a part of that? The Flood Benefit review you did for example. You turned a good review, about a great day for a great cause, into another opportunity to throw a stab towards me and my music. its obvious to everyone who reads these silly remarks that you have something against me personally for some reason. You're entitled to your opinion, but your libel is another issue. Oh and by the way, I notice you're affiliated with Notenef Promotions. How so?
